Garden Composting Tips
? 5/10/2010 - A Compost Primer:
Most gardeners and landscapers will agree almost un mously t the single b thing you can do y lawn is to add compost. Good, org c compost can remedy almost any problem you have with y soil. If you soil is too acidic, adding compost will help neutralize it and bring it back to a proper pH level. If y soil is too alkaline, ditto! Adding compost will help balance the alkalinity in the soil. If you live in an area with a lot of heavy clay, adding compost will help loosen and aerate the soil. If you live in a coastal or southern area with a lot of sand, adding compost will help bind it together. Soil lacking nutrients? Add compost to add new life to overworked soil.
So how do you make compost? It's easier n you can imagine and cheaper n anything else you will do. How cheap? How about free! All composting is, is the natural decomposition of org c matter. Walk through a dense and take a deep handful of soil from under y feet. Notice how black and rich it is. It didn't get t way from fertilizers or manure. It got t way from all the decomposing org c matter. A takes care of itself by recycling. It recycles every leaf, branch, berry, and bush. It does this quite simply. All the org c and living matter in the decomposes into compost which feeds the existing plants (and some mals!).
In the , when leaves fall from the trees, they all gather on the floor. In storms, branches may fall, as well as entire trees. This creates layers of org c matter on the floor. Eventually it rains adding fuel to the mixture. The rain aids the microbes t begin to eat the org c matter, eventually turning it into the rich, thick carpet you see on the floor. This compost feeds the living trees and other plants providing nutrients t rival the b fertilizers.
You can emulate the by creating y own compost. Avoid store bought compost, especially those made from manure. There's nothing natural about spreading rotted and decomposed cow feces on y lawn or garden. It's actually pretty gross! Especially considering the number of chemicals and steroids t are given to cattle and cows in the United States. If you must purchase or acquire compost from somewhere else, call y local mu ipal office. Many mu ipalities have their own composting facilities and they give away the compost to their idents free! In township, example, all the leaves t are gathered in the fall from the local streets, are mulched up and composted in a huge field. In a year or two, once the leaves have thoroughly composted, we are permitted to haul away as much compost as we like! The only catch is t we must load it selves, but this is a small price to pay free, org c mulch.

? 5/9/2010 - Homemade Compost Bins - Simple to make and ready to go:
Homemade compost bins allow one to fit the bin into the general aspect of the property and to tailor the bin or bins to the needs of the gardener and property. They are neither tedious nor difficult to build and may be made from a variety of materials.
The simplest bin is of course none at all. Compost will work quite well in a p alongside the garden. However, some areas do not allow what they consider unsightly p s of garbage in the yard wh a bin is more than acceptable. Besides this, many gardeners prefer the look, convenience and ritual of a series of compost bins.
A quick bin may be made from a 10 length of welded steel wire fencing, 3 t high. 14 gauge is about right for strength and sturdiness combined with reasonable weight. Clip off the fencing at one end to leave the ends protruding and bend them over to form hooks. Roll the wire into a circle about 3 t round and hook the end of the cage. You now have a compost cage about 3 t round and 3 t high. This is an ideal size for a compost bin. Add the compost to it and when it is time to turn of use the compost, unhook the end and peal the cage from the p .
Next up in simplicity is the pallet bin. Nail three pallets together to form a U. Take a fourth and wire it to the other three so as to form a door. Alternatively it may be hinged. Some composters prefer to leave off this fourth side or door and simply fill the U, taking compost and adding material through the open side.
A wood frame bin can easily be made by using 2x4 lumber to make four wooden frames each 3 t by 3 t or 4 t by 4 t. Butt joints and nails are sturdy enough for a compost bin. Each frame can be covered with fencing, chicken wire, snow fence, lattice work or anything else with about a 2" opening to let air into the p . Nail three of the frames into a U shape to form a back and two sides. The other frame can be hinged to make a door along with hook and eye arrangements to open and close the bin.
Cinder blocks can be used to make the three sides of a compost bin. Remember to make the bin about three t high, wide and deep. Leave an inch or so between blocks for air to reach the p . Bricks could also be used but require a lot more work and stacking. One variation on this stacking theme is to use hay bails. Not only do they provide insulation for retaining the composting heat, but they also gradually break down, adding themselves to the compost p .
Wh there are certainly endless variations on these themes a few things should be kept in mind. The p should be at least 3 x 3 x 3 t for good composting heat. Aeration is important to keeping the compost working and the easiest way to do so is to turn the p . Make the bin so as to facilitate the turning. With this in mind, consider making three bins: one to gather material, and two to turn the material from one bin to the next.
Whichever bin you make, compost will happen along with the satisfaction of making your own compost in your own bin.

? 5/8/2010 - Making Compost - is it ready?:
Compost may or may be ready for use. In fact, compost that has been only partly prepared may harm the growth of by leaching nitrogen as it con ues to decompose in the l. Depending on the na e of the materials compos g, it may contain materials toxic to . Some produce horm s that prevent ot from growing near them and compe g for nutrie in the l. These need full compos g to break down and be rendered harmless. How is to t when the compost is ready and to what uses may it be put?
As in many an endeavor, experience is a great teac and an experienced composter will t if the process is finished by the tex e and sm of the product. However, if your are sure t e are a couple of ways to t .
If you are hot compos g and the pile has been active but has now cooled down, give it a ning, ensuring that the mois e content is correct for good compos g, about the feel of a wrung out sponge. If the pile does heat up after a day or two it is likely finished. Again, it should sm earthly sweet and have a crumbly tex e. If it is finished use it and if it is finished you have already ned it for the next heat and cool cycle.
An even more sure test is to take a sample of the compost, at least a good handful, and put it into a glass jar. Close the lid and ce it in a warm, sunny location for about three days. Open the jar and take a sm . Sour sm s mean the compost is d and an earthy, rich sm means it is ready for use. If d , you may eit n the pile or but test it again in about a week. Once finished, compost may be used in a myriad of way.
At the end of the growing season or before it starts compost makes a great l conditi r. As a rule of thumb inch of compost is sufficient for l that is already fairly good, and three inches for problem l or a first year garden. One cubic foot of compost will cover 12 square feet of garden to inch deep and four square feet of garden three inches deep. If about a third of a pile is lost during the compos g process, a pile three feet high, wide and deep will produce about 18 cubic feet of compost. Fork the compost into the top three inches of l and certainly no deeper than eight inches for best results.
During the season apply compost as a mulch for the growing . It will help to retain mois e in the l and to suppress weeds. Use any w e from to three inches. Rainfall and watering will cause it to act as a slow release fertilizer as the water trickles through. Earthworms love it and will carry it down into the l for you while they leave behind even ric cas gs for a nt boost.
For a nt boost during the growing season, make a compost tea by cing a good shovel full of compost in a burlap sack and cing it in a 5 gallon bucket of water in the hot sun for a week. Pour the resul g "tea" liberally over the to boost their growth. Unlike commercial liquid fertilizers, compost tea will burn the and only encourage growth. The spent compost in the bag is still a good l conditi r.
Whatever the use to which it is put, w finished compost will be loved by the garden and the gardener alike.
